About Us
The first group of Catholic students to become a
chartered Baylor organization was the Newmann Club in the early
1950's. At that time, and until about 1992, the group met in an
old house on 7th street that the Diocese of Austin had purchased
for the group. In the 1980's, the Diocese decided that the needs
of the Baylor Catholic population would best be met by making the
Newmann Club into a Ministry of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church
(here in Waco). Thus the Catholic Student Association was born.
Father Jim Chamberlain, Assoc. pastor of St. Mary's, became the
first Priest to celebrate Mass with this new association. Father
Chamberlain also served as Director of the association. Father
Bob Scott and Deacon Joe Weynand then served alongside each other,
followed by Father Jim Deaconson our current Chaplain and director
In 1992 the Catholic Student Association moved into
the Methodist Student Center on Speight Avenue, with Father Frank
Miller as the regular celebrant of the Mass. With the establishment
of the Marist Fathers community in Waco in 1998, Fathers Kevin
Duggan and John Ulrich became the regular celebrants.
The Catholic Student Center (located on 9th Street)
was dedicated by Bishop John McCarthy on October 10, 1999, and
is the current home of the Catholic Student Assocation. In 2001,
Father Jim Deaconson was reassigned back to the Catholic students
at Baylor University as the full time chaplain of the Catholic
Student Center. The CSC provides a place not only for the communal
worship of the Catholic population, but also a place to study,
meet friends, and enjoy fellowship. It is our hope that you will
stop by sometime and meet us, if you have not already done so.
